BORMIOLI LUIGI, BANISHING CO2 EMISSIONS
A pioneer in the use of electric furnaces since 1986, Bormioli Luigi Group uses electricity today for 65% of its production and is shifting towards green energy. This positioning
illustrates a long-standing strategy of constant optimization. When it comes to industrial processes, the electric transition, neutral décor and eco-design, the group's 2030
ambitions are clear.
Bormioli Luigi has a long-standing approach to sustainable development, and is aiming to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2030, compared with a 2016 base. In the mid-term, its target is a 30% reduction by 2026. In 2021, it achieved a 14% reduction, and its aim for 2022 is 20%. As such, the group is responding to demand from its customers to optimize the carbon footprint of their packaging.
TOWARDS 100% ELECTRIC PRODUCTION
Bormioli Luigi is progressively replacing its last remaining gas furnaces with electric equivalents. This major shift will take place over time, and will involve a hybrid furnace process.
PCR, THE PRIORITY SOLUTION
In addition, the group is developing a flexible offer using high-quality PCR glass, offering brands a variable percentage of post-consumer recycled content, from 15 to 40%, depending on the required design. It also offers a service called "Your PCR," which involves the addition of a specified percentage of PCR into the feeder. Bormioli Luigi is accompanying brands with its expertise for this type of specific project (recommended percentage, testing and the choice of décor...).
INTERCHANGEABLE COLLARS, AN EXCLUSIVE PROCESS
Bormioli Luigi is innovating with a new, patented, flexible and cost-effective industrial model. Thanks to the personalization of a bottle's collar and neck in the mold, this process allows the possibility of using different types of ring. As such, a visually identical bottle can be developed for several references, using different neck sizes, formats, and the choice of a screw or crimped neck. This solution allows significant gains in development time, cost and of course environmental impact.
ECODESIGN AT THE SERVICE OF BRANDS
Bormioli Luigi has developed a dedicated LCA tool in partnership with Sphera. This tool allows it to accompany customers in their choices when it comes to processes, décor and other innovations. In terms of ecodesign, the group is notably pushing towards reductions in product weight, a major contributor to carbon dioxide emissions.
Building on the success of ecoLine, which offers an average 40% reduction in the weight of a bottle, Bormioli Luigi is innovating to develop even lighter bottle designs that offer the same resistance and properties as standard models.
TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DECOR
While the group continues to innovate to develop a broad range of decoration options, it is also increasingly vigilant about their sustainability credentials, both through the materials used and close attention to their recyclability. Surrounded by experts, Bormioli Luigi has a predictive optical analysis system that allows it to define and guarantee to customers the recyclability of decorated bottles.
